There are several popular theories, but the primary one is that your brain experiences millions of stimuli every day. While we sleep, the brain begins to sort this data into the stuff that we need to remember, and the things that we can forget. This is where psychology comes in.

The writing is evocative, both during the erotic scenes and everywhere else, and Elaine's journey from terrified kidnapping victim to a power player in this strange new world is believable and compelling. If you're looking for a book with both great erotic scenes AND great storytelling, you should definitely check this one out.
Held in Dreams appeared originally in a different form on the Deviant Arts website under the title of "The Making of a Goddess", where one can find other examples of Burquette's erotic fiction. An account, which is free, and verifying that you are old enough to read adult material, is all that is needed. There are a lot of talented writers and artists getting their start there, so it's more than worth the effort. One could summarize the book as "Woman is kidnapped by a supernatural creature, th Held in Dreams appeared originally in a different form on the Deviant Arts website under the title of "The Making of a Goddess", where one can find other examples of Burquette's erotic fiction.
One could summarize the book as "Woman is kidnapped by a supernatural creature, they have terrific sex, and they live happily ever after. Elaine proves to not be a passive individual, instead responding to these threats and defining herself as a competent person. And there is sex in this story, lots of sex, which sometimes assumes a BDSM flavoring. While many tales of abduction emphasize the degrading and humiliating issues around that, and the better-written ones wrestle with the issue of coerced sex on an unwilling partner, or rape -- which is the reason I suspect Tom Quin has been able to finish his classic Usenet story "Captured Caroline" -- Burquette nicely avoids that ethical issue.
The sex in all its forms in this novel is consensual and joyous, and there is no humiliation here. Further, the sex in this story naturally arises from the plot; the plot is neither an excuse for the characters getting randy with each other, nor an inappropriate emphasis in telling the story. This is one of the best stories of its genre I have read. I gave it 4 stars only because the publisher gave it 5; I reserve the right to add another star as more people contribute their reviews.
